High blood pressure, also known as hypertension is a common condition that most people have, yet many do not realise it. It is a condition that generally does not have any warning signs but can lead to life-threatening conditions like strokes and heart attack, if it goes undetected. This is why it is essential to you get your blood pressure levels checked regularly, especially after you cross 40 years of age. The good news however, is that high blood pressure can be controlled with simple medication. Early diagnosis of the condition along with basic, healthy changes can control your blood pressure levels and prevent serious damages from occurring. Before we find out the main causes of high blood pressure, let???s understand what blood pressure is.

What is blood pressure?

Blood pressure refers to the force exerted by the blood on the walls of your arteries as the blood flows through them. Your heart is responsible for pumping blood into the blood vessels, which in turn carry the blood throughout your body. Blood pressure goes up and down consistently and naturally, as it adjusts to the needs of your heart and the activities you are doing. However, if the heart has to work harder to pump blood to the body, your arteries can harden and cause diseases like strokes, heart failure and kidney diseases, which are caused due to high blood pressure.

Blood pressure reading is measured in systolic and diastolic in which the normal range should be 120 systolic and 80 diastolic. If the reading exceeds this range, one could be suffering from high blood pressure.
