How to Check your Vehicle's Insurance Status Online?

25 Nov 2021

Vehicle’s insurance status online

The Motor Vehicles Act 1988 makes it mandatory for every motorist to have a valid vehicle insurance policy to drive on the roads in the country. Failing to abide by this requirement can attract heavy penalties. Now, motor insurance policies need to get renewed from time to time to stay active. And it is quite easy to forget to keep track of your insurance renewal date. Fortunately, you can now check your car insurance status online.

The process of checking your vehicle insurance online is quite simple and can be completed in just a few clicks. There are three ways to get your policy details. Let’s look at each one -

Retrieving your insurance policy details using the web portal of the Insurance Information Bureau (IIB):

Retrieving your vehicle insurance policy details using the IIB website is extremely easy. However, do remember that the IIB web portal only has the database of insurance policies issued after 1 April 2010.

Here are the steps to follow to retrieve your policy details.

Step 1: Visit the IIB web portal.

Step 2: Fill in the required details such as the vehicle registration number, accident date, your name, email id, address, and anything else required.

Step 3: Click on ‘submit’.

Step 4: After clicking on the submit button, the insurance policy associated with the details entered by you will be displayed on the screen.

If you cannot check vehicle insurance status online for any reason, try running the search again by entering the engine and chassis number of your vehicle.

Retrieving your insurance policy details using VAHAN E-services:

This is an alternate method by which you can check your vehicle’s insurance policy details. Here are the steps to follow when using the web portal offered by VAHAN E-services.

Step 1: Visit the website offered by VAHAN E-services. Click on the ‘Know your vehicle details’ button.

Step 2: Enter your vehicle’s registration number and the verification code.

Step 3: Click on the button labelled as ‘search vehicle’.

Step 4: After clicking on the ‘search vehicle’ button, the expiry date of your insurance policy will be displayed on the screen, along with other details related to your vehicle.

Retrieving your insurance policy details using QR code:

The IRDAI has made it compulsory for all insurance policies to have a QR code. These help traffic police officers to verify the authenticity of your insurance detail. If you have the photo or a copy of the QR code associated with your insurance policy, you can scan the same and get to check car insurance status online.

Your insurance provider can also help

If you want details on your vehicle insurance status check online on the insurer’s website. You should be able access important information on your coverage by logging in as a customer. You may also get in touch with the insurer on their helpline number if you have any other queries. Always remember to renew your vehicle’s insurance policy on time to reap all its offered benefits.
